Mark Farina’s ‘Mushroom Jazz’ might be for the afters, but this Lab NYC session is for the main event—a masterfully groovy deep house set that proves funk is a feeling, not a BPM. The vibe is all low-slung grooves, head-nodding rhythms, and that specific, warm condensation that only forms in a room truly locked in. Farina takes his time, cruising at an average 120.2 BPM and using the ubiquitous 12A key as a soulful foundation from which to explore dusty samples and swinging percussion.
The energy is beautifully balanced, with the low-end thick and rubbery, the mids rich with organic textures, and just enough high-end sparkle to keep it airy. This is a digger’s paradise: Los Sucios’ ‘Sucias (Acid Dub Mix)’ brings raw, squelchy energy, while Stephen Encinas’ ‘Disco Illusion’ and Innacircle’s ‘Yagisuki’ offer sun-drenched, jazzy flourishes.
