Standing under the Atomium's gleaming spheres, you could be forgiven for thinking you've stumbled into a ritual sacrifice — if the sacrifice was your last shred of hearing and the altar was a Funktion-One rig. Amelie Lens' Cercle set is a declaration of war on subtlety, a 134 BPM assault that respects no one's eardrums. This is the sound of industrial Belgium, repurposed for a rave inside a futuristic steel monument. The production is immaculate: the kick drum is a blunt instrument, the hi-hats are precision-cut, and the whole thing is drenched in a reverb that makes the Atomium's domes sing.
We're not here to think; we're here to submit. Lens works predominantly in 12A, a key that's practically the default for peak-time techno, but she modulates into 3B and 7A to create moments of tense release. The energy arc is a sustained plateau of high-intensity — the low energy average of 0.656 might sound mellow, but that's because the tracklist is all about the low-end rumble, with minimal mids and a razor-sharp high end. Tracks like 'Man Over Machine' and 'Storm' are weapons-grade, designed to strip the floor of any pretence. The mixing is relentless: hard cuts and long blends that keep the pressure on, never letting the crowd catch their breath. Crate diggers will note the inclusion of Frazi.er's 'Temptation', a chugging, hypnotic cut that's pure warehouse fuel, and Milo Spykers' 'Zenith', which adds a layer of industrial percussion that feels like a malfunctioning factory floor.
The surprise is Farrago's 'Sinner', a track that leans into acid-tinged menace, and A*S*Y*S' 'Bassface' — a name that tells you exactly what to do. The opening track is Lens' own 'Man Over Machine', a statement of intent: this is the machine taking over. The peak comes with 'Bassface', where the crowd's collective roar matches the distortion, and the closing 'Closer' by Giovanni Carozza offers a brief, almost tender comedown — a single breath before the lights come up and we all admit we've been destroyed.
