Frequently Asked Questions
What is LUFS?
Loudness Units relative to Full Scale — the standard for measuring perceived loudness. Streaming platforms normalize to specific targets (Spotify: -14 LUFS, Apple Music: -16 LUFS).
What is the difference between LUFS-I, LUFS-M, and LUFS-S?
Integrated (I) measures the entire track. Momentary (M) uses a 400ms window. Short-term (S) uses a 3-second window. Streaming platforms use Integrated for normalization.
What LUFS target should I aim for?
Spotify normalizes to -14 LUFS, Apple Music to -16 LUFS, YouTube to -14 LUFS. Master to -14 LUFS for the best cross-platform result without excessive loudness penalty.
What is the LUFS target for Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music?
Spotify and YouTube normalize to -14 LUFS, Apple Music to -16 LUFS, Tidal to -14 LUFS. Mastering louder than the target gets turned down; mastering quieter plays softer than other tracks. Aim for -14 LUFS for streaming, -9 to -10 LUFS for club or radio.
How is LUFS different from RMS or peak level?
LUFS is perceptual loudness measured via the ITU BS.1770 K-weighted filter — matching how humans perceive sound. RMS measures average energy without weighting. Peak (dBFS) measures only the loudest sample. Two tracks at the same RMS can have very different perceived loudness.
What does the True Peak reading tell me?
True Peak (dBTP) detects inter-sample peaks — overshoots between samples during digital-to-analog conversion. Above 0 dBTP can clip on consumer playback even when sample peak stays under 0. Aim for -1 dBTP minimum before lossy encoding for streaming.
